Artemis Alcalay was born in Athens, Greece in 1957. She studied painting with Yiannis Moralis and Dimitris Mytaras and stage and costume design with Vassilis Vassiliadis at the Athens School of Fine Arts. She obtained a Master’s degree in studio art at New York University with Angiolla Churchill, Gerry Pryor, Livio Seguso and Idelle Weber. She attended weaving classes at the YMCA of Kifissia with Maria Leonidou and photography classes with Gerry Pryor (NYU), Laura Dodson (Praxis) and Kamilo Nollas (Exile Room).
She exhibits her work in Greece and abroad. She collaborates with contemporary dance groups as a set & costume designer and also works as a designer of hand tufted carpets. Since 2008 she participates in international film festivals with animation works. Her artworks belong to the collections of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation, the Jewish Museum of Greece, the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt, the Central Museum of Textiles, Lodz and the American College of Greece.
